The Avalanche showed last night that they wanted to be in control of their playoff hopes, and lost 5-2 to Columbus. The game started out with a kind of intensity I haven’t seen from an Avalanche team in over 10 years. It seemed like there was a yard sale on the ice every couple of minutes! Then the Blue Jackets took control, and throughout the second period you just started to know that this was it. True to his inconsistent form, Varlamov allowed 4 goals, and Columbus added a 5th in the closing minutes with an empty net.
Don’t be mad at the Avalanche though. All that would have happened if they won is a brief period of tension and wonder before watching San Jose seal their playoff berth. The sharks beat the LA Kings in a shootout last night, 6-5. It’s going to be very interesting to see the fallout from another disappointing season for the Avs. There really is no “history repeating itself” in this situation. The Avalanche haven’t had a worse 3 year period in their short history in Colorado. Just like anything else in life; when things are going great you don’t evaluate personnel at the individual level, you just hold on tight and hope it keeps up. But when things are not going well, heads must roll to get the organization back on track.
Let’s keep our heads held high though, Avalanche fans. We have a very bright future ahead of us, and nobody wanted to see the Avs get swept in the first round anyway! I don’t know about you, but I’m perfectly ok if we wait 6 months before we see the Canucks again!
