Denver, CO – Peyton Manning a Denver Bronco….did this really happen? I know I saw him with John Elway and Pat Bowlen at a press conference back in March, but is Manning really going to be wearing orange this fall? Of course he is, but the moment he puts that Broncos helmet on this summer is when it will finally really hit home for me and other Broncos fans. #18 is on our side, and instantly makes Denver Super Bowl contenders. May is quite possibly the quietest month for NFL news each and every year. After the NFL Draft in late April, there is a lull from May through early July where very little happens on the NFL news front. The Denver Nuggets were just eliminated from the playoffs after quite a run, and the Rockies are in no current shape to keep our attention for very long. So, brace yourselves Broncos fans, get plenty of rest for the next two and half months, because “Manning Camp” officially begins July 31st!
Rookies report to Dove Valley on July 26th, and veterans will do so five days later. You thought the past couple of training camps with Tim Tebow around here was a media circus? Get ready for this year. Once Peyton dons the orange and blue for his first practice, everyone will be analyzing his throws, looking for any chinks in the armor that his neck surgeries last year may have now produced. His daily interviews and press conferences will encompass question after question about how he is feeling, how he is doing with his new teammates, and what he had for breakfast. Kind of a hunch on my part, but I am thinkin that fans with #18 shirts and jerseys may dominate those practice sessions at Dove Valley. I know, quite a limb I just went out on. Cameras from all over the world will be here, as Denver will be the focus of the NFL once “Manning Camp” begins. This may actually help the incoming rookies quite a bit as a result. It will take the focus off, and may allow them to develop without such a spotlight on them that is typically the case at most training camps. DT Derek Wolfe and RB Ronnie Hillman will have every opportunity to play a lot and contribute this year.
The middle of the NFL offseason is essentially right now, as the Super Bowl was just over three months ago, and the first preseason games are roughly three months from now. It’s a time when we can take a deep breath, enjoy the spring weather, do some BBQ-ing, and catch a few Rockies games. Come July though, the NFL players will be ready to report to camp, Fantasy Football rankings and mock drafts will start appearing, and that annual football fever will begin to infect the nation. Oh yeah, one last reminder….#18 is with us, motivated, healthy, and more than likely gonna be ready to have a huge 2012 in the orange and blue!
