Tonight when the Denver Broncos play the Chicago Bears, the drama that started 3 years ago comes full circle. See for me, looking back to the start of the 2009 NFL season was a bad one. Bronco fans had just lost our future Hall of Fame coach and the new guy somehow chased our Pro-Bowl QB out of town. But little did we know how much drama would follow and where it would lead.
First, losing Jay Cutler at the beginning of 2009 was not cool. He was the first QB Denver had since Elway’s retirement that was any fun to watch. He had a strong arm, and was starting to show potential. The drama that surrounded his departure was a he said, they said, type of story you usually hear in the political arena. None the less, Broncos fans got Kyle Orton as their starting QB and a young rookie coach with a chip on his shoulder.
The next season started with a very unusual draft. Josh McDaniels had this thing for a QB from Florida. Consequently, the Broncos made a couple of strange trades during the draft where by at the end of the first round, we had this guy by the name of Tim Tebow. What followed over the next couple of years is legendary. The Broncos ended up with the best selling jersey in the NFL, a new vice president, another new coach, a #2 draft pick, billboards naming the starting QB, and one of the strangest seasons I’ve ever seen in the NFL. I watched no less than seven games last year that the Broncos had no business winning. Yet, somehow, the most popular back-up QB turned starter in NFL history, Tim Tebow, found a way.
Tim Tebow even got us into the playoffs where we ended up playing the very coach who started it all. The New England Patriots had just recently re-hired McDaniels. And they destroyed the Broncos in that game 45-10. Now for you conspiracy theorists, this could have been Bill Belichick’s plan all along. Noticing the fact that Cutler was making strides in 2008, he simply sent his apprentice in to destroy a franchise. Boy did that blow up in his face!
Which leads me back to this season, and the most wonderful off-season since the drama started. In case you haven’t heard, the Broncos picked up this guy by the name of Peyton Manning. He is pretty good. In addition, the Broncos shipped Timmy off to the Jets ending Tebow-Mania in Denver. It is funny to think that without the events of the past three seasons, Manning wouldn’t be here. Therefore, tonight when I watch the first Broncos preseason game, I probably will be able to let go of the bitterness that started 3 years ago. After losing so much, I find it fitting that the Broncos are matched up against Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall, and the Bears, thus bringing the drama full circle.
