Denver, CO – Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant www.riogranderestaurant.com , located at 15th and Blake, offers fans a great Mexican food menu and some seriously strong margaritas. Just a quick 5 block walk from Coors, the Rio is close enough to walk to and far enough away to walk off some of the tequila you will surely consume. They are open daily from 11AM-close (usually 1AM) and they offer brunch Saturday and Sunday 11-4.
The menu is very broad and would be considered southwest Mexican fare. Appetizers include excellent guacamole, chili con queso and flautas. They offer excellent green chile that comes with chicken yet you can make it braised pork green chile instead (I would recommend the pork). Main courses include salads, enchiladas, tacos and burritos. Choices of fillers include grilled mahi-mahi, grilled steak and chicken as well as grilled shrimp and veggies. Maybe go for the signature fajitas which come sizzling to the able with tons off accoutrements. My favorite are the Chili Rellenos – they come stuffed with cheese and sautéed veggies – you get your choice of sauce (I opt for the pork green chile) and rice and beans. If you don’t want the heavy feel of a fried meal, opt to have them bake the rellenos, and save some calories.
OK – let’s be honest! The Rio is famed for their on the rocks Margaritas. You can get them frozen as well and in strawberry or mango flavor along with the traditional lime. Most opt for on the rocks lime and the Rio makes them so strong they limit you to 3 during your stay. ONLY 3! Trust me – most people that have 2 feel like they just drank a pitcher. Beyond the strength I feel the Rio margaritas are the best tasting margaritas around. The Rio also has an extensive tequila offering as well as a locked tequila vault offering shots anywhere from $45 for the Gran Patron Platinum to $250 for the Jose Quervo 250 Aniversario.
The Rio is a Colorado original with the first location opened back in 1986 in Fort Collins and found immediate success so they expanded to Boulder, Denver, Greeley, Park Meadows and even Steamboat Springs.
If you haven’t been to one of the Rio’s locations you are missing out. Give them a shot, or get yourself a shot and a margarita.
