As the world turns, and every news station continues to track Peyton Manning’s every move, decision time is rapidly approaching for the 4-time MVP. He spent some serious time over the weekend both here and in Phoenix, as these two destinations appear to have the edge. Miami, Tennessee, and everywhere else have seemingly dropped behind in the sweepstakes. So where does he land? Where does he decide to call his home to end his career?
The Cardinals and Broncos both have compelling reasons for Peyton to consider. Let us first consider Arizona…..Much like Indianapolis, they play in a dome. Next season, in addition to the usual 8 home games, they play 3 more on the road in domes. That is 11 out of 16 in the dome comfort that he is used to. Not to mention the year round gorgeous weather he would enjoy down in the Phoenix area. The division he would play in, the NFC West, is not great by any means. The 49ers had a great year, but who is to say they weren’t a bit of a one year wonder? The Cardinals also have a beast named Larry Fitzgerald for Manning to throw to. They also have space available opposite Larry to potentially bring in Peyton’s buddy, Reggie Wayne. Add in Dallas Clark, and we now have the Indianapolis Cardinals, bam, just like that. The negatives involving Arizona include a typically losing culture, and a front office that is very unproven. Another very, very important thing to consider is the Cardinals offensive line. It’s not great, and that’s being kind. They have given up over 100 sacks the last 2 years, and that would have to be addressed should Peyton sign there.
Denver offers a variety of reasons for Peyton to become a Bronco. John Elway. Nuff said………When your potential new organization is run by one of the greatest QB’s of all time, that has to be so attractive for Peyton. You think those two guys wouldn’t have hundreds of conversations about playing QB in the NFL over the next few years? That has to be an enticing thought for Manning. The offensive line is very good, and the team has some really good young talent for Peyton to work with. This organization has proven over the years it is committed to winning, and is one of the most respected franchises in the NFL. The AFC West seems to be there for the taking, as the Raiders, Chiefs, and Chargers are all a mish-mash of question marks. It would also keep Manning in the AFC, which is where he apparently wants to stay. The only real drawback is the climate, and the outdoor stadium here. We all know the weather is a crapshoot from October on, and history says Peyton has not exactly been stellar when playing in the elements. Oh, and by the way, I am not even considering the Tebow issue. Trust me, I am sure Manning made it very clear that he won’t come here if he has to deal with the Tebow circus. Timmy will have to be dealt for Peyton to sign on the dotted line.
From all indications, we should hear where Peyton is going in the next few days. He is a no nonsense guy, and wants to get to work. It all depends on his priorities, which none of us really know. It he wants to roll the dice, and make his mark on a franchise that has never won a Super Bowl, he will go to Arizona. If he were able to get the Cardinals a Lombardi trophy, it would greatly enhance his legacy as one of the true legends. If he chooses Denver, he can hit the ground running with a proven organization ready to contend immediately. He and John can have steaks together four times a week, and compare war stories while they battle it out on the golf course. The decision Peyton has may be difficult, but there is only one place where his achievements can potentially be a Mile High…..

I gotta think a 36 year old QB who’s had 4 neck surgeries is very concerned with protection and Denver has the best O-line out of the teams he’s looking at. It can’t hurt that Peyton got to watch Timmy getting 12 seconds every snap before he could get a wide open reciever that he could throw a duck to somewhere within 10 yards of his hands. Also doesn’t hurt that he watched John Fox tailor make an offense around a QB that was totally in water deeper than he could handle. Manning like to run the Offense and he sees a coach that may just let him do it.
I don’t have a horse in this race, not a fan of either party but to me it makes sense for Manning to come here.
