Denver, CO. The Colorado Rockies are showing some of the talent fans expected before the start of the 2012 season. Although hampered by injuries for most of the season, the Rockies have some youth that is starting to show positive glimpses into the future. The L.A. Dodgers shiny new pitcher Josh Beckett got a glimpse of this talent last night against the Rockies. On only Beckett’s second pitch of the game Tyler Colvin launched a third deck home run to right field. Beckett pitched pretty well only giving up 3 runs but the Rockies used starter Jeff Francis along with piggyback Josh Roenicke, Rex Brothers and Matt Belisle to shut out the Dodgers 10-0.
Tonight the Rockies turn to Tyler Chatwood in his sixth straight start since being called up from AAA. The All Star team that the Dodgers are putting on the field don’t seem to know each other yet. The roster looks very different from the beginning of the season and are trying to buy themselves a championship. Those parts and pieces may come together as the season goes on but they looked lost at the plate last night. Chatwood brings a plus fastball tonight to counter the slow curve ball style Jeff Francis showed them last night.
With the current August streak the Rockies will avoid losing 100 games this season, giving the team a sense of accomplishment. With Troy Tulowitzki and Jason Giambi making rehab starts this week and likely to return this weekend, the Rockies should look to improve even more. Rookie Wilin Rosario hit his 21st home run last night which leads all major league rookies. Tyler Colvin is raking at the plate along with temporary second baseman DJ LeMahieu who is on fire at the plate as well. Even though they are having a great August, so is the rest of the NL West as the Rockies have the fourth most wins in August, putting them in a familiar last place.
As fans, we all have to hope the Rockies front office doesn’t take this late season success and claim that their plan is working. The Rockies have to make some changes in the off season if just to satiate season ticket holders. The Rockies either need to use Michael Cuddyer to draw some free agents or rely on their youth and struggle through another poor season. The Dodgers may not be the blue print for creating a competitive team, but they are being aggressive and the Rockies need to look at their success and mirror at least a portion of that blue print.
