Denver, CO. With merely 30 games left in this painful season, the Colorado Rockies are playing well and could play the role of spoiler in the NL. With a four game series starting today against the NL wildcard leading Atlanta Braves, the Rockies could ruin a few teams chances at the playoffs. Lookout San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers – here come the hot Colorado Rockies. They meet up with the Giants 7 more times and the Dodgers for 3 more.
Pitching has been the Achilles heel for the Rockies this year, but the bats have come alive lately. Against the Padres in a 3 game series over the weekend, the Rockies scored 24 runs while winning two out of three for their second series win in a row. The young players for the Rockies have been the hot sticks lately but in Sunday’s victory Ramon Hernandez and Chris Nelson both had monster home runs to take some of the spotlight away from the band of rookies and second year players.
The four man piggyback rotation has also been effective allowing for the starters to not get overworked and lead into the bullpen what has lately been in the fifth inning. Although Jhoulys Chacin pitched a remarkable game against the Padres going 7 full innings and turning the game over to Matt Belisle and Carlos Torres for the victory.
If the Rockies continue their hot play, they could alter the path of the playoffs for many teams they play while potentially helping out another team they aren’t even playing who may be looking for some help to get in.
