Denver, CO – As the Colorado Rockies 2012 season grows closer, let’s make some predictions for the upcoming season. We will explore aspects from the pitching rotation to individual performances and expectations.
Starting Pitching
Who will stand out as the ace of the squad? So far Jeremy Guthrie is making the case to be the opening day starter and will be looked to for over 200 innings of work. Biggest question for Guthrie will be run support. In Baltimore he was a workhorse but got the worst run support in the league. What kind of impact will Juan Nicasio have? Juan has been hitting 93-95 MPH on the radar gun and is showing no ill effects from his neck injury. Jhoulys Chacin has not looked great in spring training but looks to have secured what looks like the number 2 spot in the rotation. Drew Pomeranz has also looked on top of his game early and could be an important lefty in the rotation until Jorge De La Rosa returns in early July
Prediction – Jeremy Guthrie will prove he can be the ace and will win 12 + games this season as long as the run support is there. Nicasio and Chacin will win 10 + games and will show the Rockies top 3 hurlers can compete with the rest of the NL West. Until De La Rosa comes back in July – the last two spots could vary considerably and could be the key to whether the Rockies start of the first half strong or struggle to come close to .500 baseball.
