Denver, CO. The Colorado Rapids will have a representative for the upcoming Marbella Cup in Spain with young midfielder Shane O’Neill. This is the first time Shane has been selected to play for the team at the young age of 19. The tournament takes place this month and is a great showcase for not only young players from the MLS, but from around the world.
Shane O’Neill played at Fairview High School joining Conor Casey as another local Rapids player. O’Neill made his first MLS appearance against Portland last month and looks to be a future star for the Rapids. At Fairview, O’Neill set school records with 48 goals and 27 assists in his high school career. In his senior year O’Neill also received selection as the Gatorade Boys Soccer Player of the Year, Denver Post All Colorado team and Front Range Player of the Year. Shane intended to play college soccer for the University of Virginia but was drafted by the Rapids and decided to go pro instead.
Other Rapids Notes:
The Rapids will be participating in Soccer Kicks Cancer in their match against the San Jose Earthquakes. Both teams will wear pink ribbon patches on their jerseys and will have pink towels on the sideline and the match ball will be pink as well. There will also be an auction with t-shirts, game balls and jerseys behind section 129 during the game with proceeds going to Kroenke Sports Charities.
