Scottsdale, AZ – The Rockies Jeremy Guthrie worked a very efficient second outing Monday against the San Diego Padres. Guthrie’s main focus was on his off speed pitches. After a first at bat home run by Cameron Maybin, Guthrie settled in and retired the next 10 batters. Guthrie went 4 innings and only used 41 pitches to make a good push for the top of the rotation.
The Rockies pitching staff could really get a shot in the arm with the veteran presence of Guthrie along with the old guy Jamie Moyer making a push to be in the rotation. Even if Moyer doesn’t make the starting rotation, both he and Guthrie could really bring the veteran leadership the pitching staff has been missing. The emergence of Juan Nicasio and Jhoulys Chacin following Guthrie could make for a very competitive 1, 2 3 in the rotation with a battle for the last 2 spots until Jorge DeLaRosa returns in July.
